Saharan Archaeological Research Association (SARA) considers any aspect of Saharan studies to be relevant to its interests. However, at this point of the research process most of the research attention is being focused on the western Sahara. Over time, it is believed that the geographical interests of SARA will expand to other adjacent regions and beyond. However, unlike the eastern side of the desert, countries such as Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Chad, Western Sahara and southern Algeria have had little exposure to climate or archaeological studies. Those rare scientists who have chosen to work in this underrepresented region of the world are applauded and encouraged to join their interests and expertise toward the broader goal of documenting and interpreting the process of early social complexity in the Sahara.
