UNESCO chief appeals for protection of Timbuktu’s documentary heritage

Reports that rebels have over-run and looted centres containing thousands of ancient books and documents in Mali’s historic city of Timbuktu has led the head of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to appeal to all relevant authorities to be on the alert against any attempt to traffic items stolen from these centres.

Job: Postdoctoral Fellowship in Environmental Security (Geography), Colgate University

Colgate University’s Department of Geography seeks to appoint a one-year postdoctoral scholar in the field of Environmental Security to begin Fall semester 2012. We encourage applications from candidates whose own expertise lies at the intersection of Ecology and Security Studies, and whose research focuses on the effects of environmental insecurity on vulnerable populations. Preference will be given to candidates holding a Ph.D in Geography, but applications from candidates in relevant Social Science fields who are capable of linking environmental dimensions of geopolitics to threatened populations will also be considered. The Postdoctoral Scholar will teach three courses per year, share their research work with the community, and actively participate in and contribute to the life of the Geography Department. Applicants should have received their Ph.D. no earlier than 2010; persons holding tenure-track appointments are not eligible to apply. Ph.D. candidates must have degree in hand by the time of appointment. This position carries a competitive salary with full benefits and some research and/or travel support; there is a possibility of renewal for a second year.
